Keurig Giveaway

July 20, 2011

I’ve mentioned this before, but as a food blogger, I sometimes find offers in my email inbox.  For me, these offers fall into one of four categories.  There is the “you’ve never heard of me, but I would love to write a guest post on your blog about something that has nothing to do with the food you cook or write about”.  Also the “you’ve never heard of us, but send us your content and we will not pay you but we will link directly to your site”.  Or the “how would you like a giant box of bacon/sausage because clearly, we have never read your site?”  And finally, thankfully, the “you have heard of us and how about we send you something you actually want?”

Keurig falls into that last category.  Imagine my delight to find an email from these guys offering me a coffee maker.  You see, I love coffee.  I live in coffee capitol of the country.  Within a square mile of my house there are probably 20+ places to get a terrific cup of coffee including one of the very best in the city (they compete in and have won the Barista Olympics) which is just 1½ blocks up the street.  I never make coffee at home because of that.  But sometimes, I don’t want to walk out the front door just for a cup of joe and sometimes I don’t want to pay over $3 just to wake up in the morning.  I have an old Cuisinart coffee maker and in dire straights I will haul it out of the basement and make mediocre coffee – and therein lies the problem.  If I can get decent coffee at a gas station, and in Seattle you can, why would I make a bad cup at home?

So I said yes to Keurig, please send me your wonderful machine.  I was very transparent about my plans.  If I liked it, I would write about it on my blog.  If I didn’t, I wouldn’t.  Originally, they wanted me to write about it multiple times, tweet about it and to all that I said no thank you.  I need to love something to plug it here.  But Keurig wanted me to have the machine anyway, I guess they were confident that I would love it.

And I do.  Randy does not drink coffee so having a sleek looking machine that makes one cup at a time is perfect in our house.  I wondered how it would do with a brunch crowd and it behaved beautifully.  Each person got to make their own cup of coffee and if they needed a refill, they just made another.  So much better (and fresher!) than pouring from a pot sitting on the warming tray.  It only takes a little over a minute for a perfectly fresh cup of coffee.  Keurig also sent me a nice variety of coffees to try and there are tons of choices, including teas and hot chocolate.  The coffee I have made tastes great and Randy has liked the tea as well.

Because I like to share the bounty, I asked if they would allow me to give away a machine on my blog.  Not only did they say yes, they are offering an even sleeker machine than the one they sent me!  How to win a Platinum Brewer?  I am so curious about all of you – I sit here and blab about my food, my family and all manner of things and, for the most part, I know next to nothing about you.  So please, tell me one thing about yourself.  What you do, where you live, how many kids you have, the name of your cat – just one thing.  Make it interesting if you like.  The winner will be chosen at random and the contest will close at noon PDT on Tuesday, July 26th which is, coincidentally, my birthday.

CONTEST CLOSED! Thanks for all the entries.  Winner to be announced tomorrow.

Finally, I forgot to post these photos in the Salted Caramel Squares post.  Those squares are sophisticated enough for the end of a fancy dinner party and simple enough to be adored by a four and six-and-a-half year old.  While I was trying to get a photo of the squares, the boys were following me around the house waiting for their chance to eat them.  Yesterday, I made Ashley’s beloved chocolate chip cookies because the cookie jar was empty and when Spencer saw them on the cooling rack he said, “Why didn’t you make more caramel squares?”

Also, Graham lost his top front tooth.  I know the photo is blurry but I love that face.

  14. Random fact? I drink decaf coffee while everyone else in my house drinks (LOTS) of caffeinated coffee. That means that I often don’t get my cup of coffee, I succumb and drink caffeinated even though it doesn’t agree with me, or I have to wait for them to drain the pot, and brew myself a cup or two. This would be so great to have. I could brew myself one cup of decaf without difficulty!

  78. Yup, you’ve just about classified all of the review emails I get into those four categories. Most of them fall into the first three. In fact, I randomly got sent a meat cookbook yesterday. I can’t even imagine what I’m going to do with it.

Hmmm. Random fact about me. I hate each and every one of the classic trilogy of condiments – mayo, mustard, and ketchup.

  79. Ramona, my Kitchen Aid mixer, is the trusty girl who has followed me through life. Four months ago, during a Sable experiment, Ramona began to smell…well..sort of burned. I turned her off. I waited several days thinking she might get better over time. A little rest. No pressure. I turned her on again. She still smelled bad. This called for emergency intervention because I cannot be without my stand mixer. A true test of patience was looming.

I telephoned Reliable Appliance in Bayport, MN. The owner, Mr. Wolff, said to bring her over the next day. Katherine put Ramona in an old peach box. I wanted to cover her with a fluffy towel. It was so cold outside. Katherine discouraged me. She put Ramona in the back seat and strapped her in with the seat belt. We like Reliable Appliance because the owner can fix anything and he is honest. He was great with our senior vacuum cleaner, Jacques.

When you first walk into Reliable Appliance, the place smells like cigarettes. No cigarettes are evident, but I know that back room is overflowing with butts. It is like our childhood. There is a big bowl of wrapped candy on the counter…I always go for the Bit-O-Honey. Unencumbered by parental musings that we should not touch or we have had enough sweets, we can have as many pieces of candy as we want. I eat one Bit-O-Honey immediately and put two more in my pocket. I do not know Mr. Wolff well, but I know he will take care of Ramona. It was his son, Russell who gave us the sad diagnosis on Sylvia, our 34 year old Harvest Gold dryer.

Without Ramona, I am reduced to using wooden spoons, my hand mixer, Tyrone, and my food processor, Tort. It is not the same as working with Ramona, who is quite a sturdy girl. They do not make Kitchen Aid today like they did in the old days. We have olden days Ramona and we want her to be well. It will take a while for parts. Undeterred, we will have fun days coming up. Cooking and visiting days.

A week later, Ramona has come back from Reliable Appliance. It was her capacitor. All Mr. Wolff of Reliable Appliance told me is that the capacitor is like a battery but it is electric. I still did not understand but when he went to the unseen smokey back room to retrieve Ramona, I took 4 Bits-O-Honey, putting 3 into my pocket and eating the other with great celebratory flourish.

Mr. Wolff told me Ramona had many good years left and she and only she could make my bread and cookies. I knew this because Tyrone was barely useful, except for whipped cream. When I told Tyrone that Ramona was coming home, he could give a rip. Mr. Wolff put Ramona back into her peach box and I started on my way to the car.

Main street in Bayport was busy in front of Reliable Appliance. Since I was the only one in Reliable Appliance I knew it had to be people at the Legion or at Not Just A Cafe a/k/a the NJ Cafe. The NJ Cafe makes pancakes as big as your head. The sidewalk was icy and I hung on to Ramona in her peach box. I brought a fluffy towel for the mixing dervish so she would not get too cold. We drove home. I ate all of my Bits-O-Honey. When I got home, Katherine brought Ramona in the house. We put her in her place of honor and I covered her with the hand-made cloth cake cover Steve and Tom made for her. I put Tyrone back into the drawer. We have not really spoken since.

I am happy to have retired from the law and to be able to concentrate on my baking, cooking, our gardens and honey bees. Perhaps a Keurig would be a good thing. :) Yes, it would be a very good thing…to go with all these things I make.

  80. I just found out from this blog that my friend ASHLEY in Park City is PREGNANT! Ashley! Hilarious to find out on Dana Treat’s blog. She actually turned me onto this blog because of the “Ashley’s Beloved Chocolate Chip Cookie” recipe (NOT the same Ashley). I digress.

I am going to start my 1 year internship as a high school counselor this fall at the Salt Lake Center for Science Education and I KNOW that I would LOVE a fresh cup of coffee from that slick little machine to help get me through the day.

Random Fact: I was once locked in an outhouse for over an hour.

  132. Hello Dana. My name is Ingrid. I’m from South Dakota. Nice to meet you. I love your blog. Why? I live in a small fishing village in Panama and there aren’t a whole lot of restaurants. Or grocery stores. That’s where your blog comes in. You give me the ideas I need in order to not eat the same darn thing every day.

So since there aren’t many restaurants and there isn’t a Whole Foods, or a Trader Joe’s here in Pedasi, Panama, I end up cooking and baking A LOT. With very limited ingredients. (As in: I’m ecstatic when once every 6 months I get asparragus or artichokes.) Aside from the usual, we make all kinds of bread, cheese, pita, granola, hummus (my husband is Israeli), and pizza in the brick oven we built. So, to make a long story short, that amazing coffee maker would be an excellent addition to my kitchen. (Though now that I think about it I’m not sure how you would go about shipping down here…)

Thank you very much for your inspiration.

  201. This is regarding the Kerurig giveaway. I was a nurse for profession 9 years ago but had to stop nursing to become a home nurse to my severely disabled little boy who has multiple disabilities. One of those is autism which means he needs little to no sleep while I get more and more worn down;. :) oh yeah and I am not vegetarian or vegan but read your blog religiously for your salads and desserts. Any ideas what to cook for someone that doesn’t like the sensory input of meat but isn’t allowed to have tomatoes, potatoes, avacados, bananas, kiwi, or papaya??? Latex allergies make eating hard believe it or not.

I have only just got into coffee and I really love it super sweet (though I wish I didn’t, my teeth won’t thank me). I half hate buying it ‘take-away’ because of the expense and wasted cardboard and half love it because of the deliciousness and how it makes me feel all ‘L.A.’. Holly

  208. As I am in med school right now, I often feel as if coffee makes up the majority of my diet. A friend has a Keurig and she like it mainly because it keeps her from drinking coffee just because she made a pot and doesn’t want it to go to waste.

Random fact: I couldn’t last as a vegan because there is no good vegan substitute for a regular cheese pizza…vegan cheese regardless of heat, prayer and patience never gets satisfyingly melty and stingy.
